This spell is a part of the Currents of Time spell chain and is found in the Currents of Time rune stone.

When people speak of breaking the chain they are speaking of the recognition that what was inherited does not have to be perpetuated. That the cycle of conflict, of loyalty to a cause or a side or a way of doing things, was never truly chosen but simply arrived with the territory of being born into a particular time and place and set of circumstances. The praeteriamancer understands this better than most. They have studied enough of the past to know that most enemies are not enemies by nature. They are enemies by chain, bound to their side by history and habit and the particular momentum of events they did not start and perhaps never fully understood. Memory can see those chains clearly. And Memory, when asked, can break them.

When this spell is cast the praeteriamancer reaches through Memory toward a single target and shows them what the chain looks like from the outside - the full weight and history of what has bound them to this conflict, laid out with the quiet impartiality of something that has witnessed every side of every story. The target must make a Hard Mental Balance check to resist. Those who succeed shake off Memory's offer, their chain holding. Those who fail find the chain simply gone, and in its absence discover that they are standing on a battlefield fighting for a side they chose by default rather than by conviction.

For 1d6 rounds the target fights alongside the praeteriamancer's party, not as a puppet or a confused mind but as someone who has, briefly and genuinely, stepped to the other side of the conflict. They are, for this brief moment of time, a true ally. When the duration ends Memory releases its hold and asks one final question, whether what was shown was enough. The target makes a Normal Mental Balance check. Those who succeed find that the chain does not reattach for something in what Memory showed them has stuck, and they are granted a free retreat, Memory ensuring no interference as they walk away from what they no longer believe in. Those who fail find the familiar pulling at them too strongly, and return to what they were, once again an enemy, the chain rebuilt by the same momentum that built it the first time. Memory cannot force anyone to stay free. It can only show them that freedom was always possible.
