× The Kingdom of Asteria takes up the largest of the sky lands in the eastern part of Chalcedonia. The oldest kingdom of the Sixth Era, its land was once the Kingdom of Triskel in the Second Area and comprises of the Auster Lands, the Chalcedon, and the Chalcedonian Jungle. Asteria is the most powerful of the three kingdoms though lately it relys more and more on trade for metals. It is also the most diverse of the kindgoms.

The capital of Asteria is Aureas, a city of the Second Era completely rebuilt and restored by Taal Zodo as his gift to his nephew Ian Mercleis. The current king, and only king in its long history, is none other than Ian Mercleis. Asteria has been regarded as the Holy Kingdom due to its king's close relationship to the divine Taal Zodo.

She had stayed stoic too long, Fenril thought. It was good to explode now. While inside he was smiling, he remained the ever steady and loyal guard on the outside.A moment ago he been her friend. Then he'd been put back in the 'tolerated' category. With a deeper than needed bow, Fenril placed his right hand over his heart and stepped back a couple paces before rising and turning to go. "As you wish, M'Lady."He stepped out of the room and closed the door quietly behind him. In the hallway his face was nearly statue like as he stood with his hands clasped behind his back, glancing up and down the halls as staff and guests moved about. He knew she wouldn't hurt herself. But he admitted to himself with a small chuckle, the dress may suffer for it before she was done. He had the feeling the poor Chancellor was going to get an eyeful, and not just a stomach full, when lunch time arrived.

After Fenril left, the anger that had built turned into a deep sadness and Elwryn found herself sinking to the floor with tears running down her cheeks and splashing onto the floor. She was at such odds with herself, with Fenril, with her clothing, with everything. She wished she had a friend right then. Someone to listen to her, to tell her everything would be okay. But Elwryn had no friends. Her constant mood swings saw to that and she wondered not for the first time if there was a medicine that would make her stable. But was that what she needed? Was this the truth she needed to learn? Elwryn looked down at the conservative outfit and wondered why she felt so out of sorts with it. All the items were items she owned, ones she liked, just put together in a way that didn't show everything off.

Gods, what was wrong with her? It was just clothing! It wasn't the be all and end all of everything. So what if she covered up some or not at all? Her clothing wasn't the reason she was here. She was here because her home government had seen her worth and usefulness and wanted to make use of her skills. How much of her skills back home had contributed to her success though? Would she even be able to make a difference here? Maybe she could, but she'd have to play by their rules and that meant being uncomfortable in her choice of clothes. She could come to like them, maybe, but for now she'd tolerate them.

Wiping tears from her eyes and face she rose on shaky legs and went to the bed. Lying on it, she closed her eyes and soon fell asleep. She would sleep until the Chancellor came for her or sent a servant to fetch her. Elwryn had made her decision. She'd focus on her mission and play by the rules of this strange new country. She didn't have to like it, but maybe she could grow to like it in time.

Fenril stood in the hall and listened to the sound of his heart break with every sniffle and tear he heard behind the door. He remembered the first time Galen had assigned him to the 'Vixen Senator'. He had actually protested. She had walked around in clothes that made sane men mad, and made sane women furious. She had the gall to use her brain to enhance those looks and stares into victory after victory.

But then he had gotten to know her. She was whip smart. Had a sense of humor she wasn't afraid to use, and backed up every clothing choice with the perfect outfit for whatever, and whoever, she would be dealing with that day.

Be he had also seen her behind closed doors. He saw she had no friends, no confidants, and had even protested his suggestion for a female guard as a companion. He guessed it was because she didn't want another woman around who would chide her for her behavior and dress. But the unexpected happen, Fenril had grown fond of her. He didn't dare call it love because it wouldn't work out if it was. There was no reason to press it.

As the sobs fell silent, he knocked lightly on the door, "Lady?" He knew better than to be familial with her within earshot of others lingering in the passageways. Walls had ears. There was no reason to give them more cause.

When he got no answer, he slowly opened the door. Seeing her on the bed, he closed the door and moved to her side. She was breathing, and nothing looked amiss other than the red cheeks and swollen eyes from crying. He moved to the foot of the bed and took her shawl to cover her. Brushing a stray lock of hair from her face, he then moved back to the door. "Sleep well, my fairy Princess..." he whispered as he stepped back into the hall for his watch.

An hour later, a small child ran up and delivered the message that the Chancellor would like permission to come fetch Lady Elwryn for lunch in half an hour. Fenril nodded and sent the child off. He then turned and knocked on the door, this time loud enough to rouse the woman in the bed. "Lady Elwryne... permission to enter?"

Her sleep had been blessedly dreamless, or at least only with dreams she couldn't remember as she was roused from her slumber by the sound of Fenril knocking on her door. She snuggled under the shawl, wondering if she had put it over her or if Fenril had and still feeling like she wanted to be left alone. She was used to being alone anyway, unless surrounded by dignitaries and the like. But even then she was still alone, always alone in some form or another.

With a sniff she called out, "You may come in Fenril." Pulling the shawl more tightly around her small frame, Elwryn watched with sad and weary eyes her guard come into the room. "Is something amiss," she asked even as she sat up, still clutching the shawl. Could it be time already to join the Chancellor for lunch? Did she even want to join him? She could always make an excuse, say that she was still tired from the journey. But did she want to do that? Start things off with a lie. She looked to Fenril, hoping for some sign as to what to do, knowing she probably looked hideous with puffy and red rimmed eyes. He would know what to do. He always knew what to do.

Fenril came in and shut the door behind him. Seeing her, vulnerable like that on the bed, made his chest tighten once more. Alone in the room with her, he moved towards the bed. "The Chancellor sent word he's coming in half an hour." He sat on the edge of the bed with a calmness that made it seem he did it all the time. "If you are feeling well, I can send word for him to seek you at dinner, if you prefer."

The loss and loneliness hung on her as blatantly as the shawl did. At least, to his eyes, it did. Reaching up to brush a strand of hair from her face, he smiled. "But if you wish to have lunch. Wash your face with cold water. It will reduce the redness and help with your eyes. A simple statement that you had fallen asleep awaiting him will be sufficient to cover the rest." He rested his hand on hers.

"Elwryn, you are one of the most amazing women I have ever had the privilege to know. It take a lot of energy to keep up as you have all these years. I've watched you. Try it this way. We still have a while till the Council convenes. If you truly wish to go back to your other, usual, attire, I will support you one hundred percent." He smiled one of those smile no one else would ever see. He would defend her to his death, whether she knew it or not.

She smiled at him, though it was small and somewhat sad. "Thank you Fenril," she said honestly. "You always know what to say and do. And I am sorry for getting so upset with you earlier. You were telling me the truth I needed to hear but didn't want to hear." She leaned over and kissed his cheek, her hand touching his thigh. When she pulled away, she looked more herself, at least in her expression and general appearance. Her clothes were still the more conservative ones she had chosen and she felt better for having Fenril there by her side.

After a moment or two of silence, Elwryn realized that she was wasting time. She needed to pull herself together, perhaps even put on a touch of makeup to hide the likely circles under her eyes. She was loathe to wear makeup but she would wear it when necessary or for a formal occasion. Standing, she let her hand trail down and off of Fenril's thigh and her smile for him was more genuine and a good deal less sad. Splashing cold water on her face and then drying it, brought the bright colors back to her cheeks and seemed to refresh her. Going to her bag she pulled out another smaller bag that held her makeup and jewelry. Taking it back to the dressing table she started to rummage through it.

Finding a necklace of silver and gold to match her belt and the earrings in her ears, she put that on and while doing that talked to Fenril. "Chancellor Mignogna has always been someone I wanted to learn from. I can hardly recall a single time that he has lost a debate. And some of the treaties he's been a part of making have been made for the history books. There is peace on this continent largely because of his influence. I can only hope to learn as much as he knows so that I can help bring peace to Elusia." Applying just a touch of foundation to even out her coloring and a bit of blush to her cheeks, she decided that that and just a touch of lip balm was enough for the afternoon. Perhaps for dinner she would put on more makeup, but right now, she wanted to feel more like herself and just this tiny little bit of makeup helped to do that.  That and talking to Fenril about her own hopes and dreams.

Fenril smiled, his hand resting a moment on hers as she touched him. "I will always tell you the truth, my Lady... and I will always be here for you if I am capable and breathing." He smiled once more and watched her move away. This time my lady, was a personal endearment and not a title like he used for others. She would sense the difference.

As she began talking of the Chancellor, he rose up and took his place by the door, once more her guard and not her confidant. "The Chancellor is a good man, Lady. I think you could teach each others plenty. While most of his works are history book worthy, if you notice, the majority of his time has been cloistered on this continent. I think your knowledge of other lands would be a wonderful trade for some of the skills he has that you possess."

While he hoped she would find a new friend and confidant in the Chancellor, one that would make her smile, he also hoped that friendship was all that was.

A few moments later, a knock on the door brought Fenril to attention. "Lady? Are you ready?" He looked at her one final time with the smile meant only for her as he waited to see if she was prepared for lunch... and her future.

Seeing her nod, Fenril opened the door to see the Chancellor standing there. "Lord Chancellor. Lady Elwryn is coming." He held his hand for her and she took it to let him lead her out the door. If Fenril had his way, it would be a while, still, before he was allowed in the Lady's sleeping chambers.

Elwryn released his hand as she reached the door and he stepped back to let her greet her escort.

"Lady Elwryn," Vic bowed and nodded respectfully, "I have come to escort you to lunch, if you desire." He was dressed in local attire. His breeches and tunic were the color of autumn leaves, with the over jacket the color of emerald green to match his calf high boots. The gold and silver brocade on his coat matched the belt he wore, which also complimented the Lady's belt and trimmings.

"I have had a picnic laid in the garden for us, if that is acceptable. I know the coming festivities will toss you into the masses soon enough. I hope I did not take liberties I wasn't supposed to." He seemed genuine and held a hand out, palm up, in offering to escort her. "If you are ready."
