One of the first things a curious and intrepid roleplayer may notice in the role play is all this talk about eras. But what does that all mean?
In this topic I will give an explanation concerning all of the era's of Nor'Ova's existance and what triggers the change to a new era.

1. What Are Eras

Eras are simply measurements of or periods of time. Currently the latest era in Nor'Ova is in the Fifth Era in the official Saga of Ablution campaign, but there has been actually six eras of Nor'Ovan history, seven if you count the era before Nor'Ovan time. That is because just like earthlings have a Before Common Era, Nor'Ovans have a Before the Eras.

2. What Are The Eras

The Eras of Nor'Ovan History and Time are:
The Xenodelphian Era: This is the Era of Creation, so to speak, the Era before normal time and space. During this era Archelus was still creating the universe and Zodo had taken parts of the material and created a galaxy-wide super world, Xenodelphia. When Xenodelphia was ultimately destroyed and its parts and stolen life were sent back across the cosmos in a big bang, the normal time finally began.
Before the Eras: This is the first era of Nor'Ovan Time, and perhaps the longest of the Nor'Ovan Eras. Counting backwards from the formation of Nor'Ova to the arrival of the Chalcedon, this period spans approximately 8,500 years (much longer though if you include the Xenodelphian Era as some scholars do).
The First Era: This is also known as the Modern Era as magic was still not a large part of Nor'Ova. Magic and the Runic Elements were always there since Nor'Ova's creation, it is just that the people pf Nor'Ova still could not interact with them. This is the age of technological growth and the era that would ultimately define what Nor'Ova was to become. It lasted exactly 2078 years before ending in the climax of a global nuclear war that ultimately became known as the Great Magic War? Why was the nuclear war referred to as the Great Magic War? Because this is when magic came about via the experimentations of Xerxes Zodo who was looking for more weapons as the nuclear war was destroying all modern weapons and via the nuclear mutation that eventually spread through every survivor and their desendents, unlocking in them the long dormant connections with the Runic Elements.
The Second Era: This is the era following the Great Magic War, though it took historians a while to start calling it a second era. This is the era the people of Nor'Ova discovered their connection with magic. This era soon became dominated by the Great Ascian War, a war where the Ascian Emperor, discovering the Power of Zodo, sought to exterminate the human race. It ended with the first attempt of casting the spell of Ablution and attempted gathering of a complete Zodo.
The Third Era: Sometimes referred to as the Golden Era, this era was mostly a positive era for regrowth and an era for heroes. This is also the era that the orb containing the Power of Zodo eventually shattered and that Taal Mercleis became the Oracle of the Power of Zodo, and thus became Taal Zodo. It's ending came when during the climatic fight between Saint Ardatha and Taal Zodo, and some say Mogen David on the side of Saint Ardatha, Taal Zodo ruined the world.
The Fourth Era: Known as the Dark Era, this is the era of the rule of Taal Zodo. Taal Zodo had ruined the world and flooded it, leaving very little land for the Nor'Ovan's to settle - at least in the area known then as The Known World. None could venture past the Known World due to the great magic storm that Taal Zodo placed around it, but later reports indicate that there was a thriving world beyond the control of Taal Zodo. This was a dark era because of the rule of Taal Zodo, but in all reality it was still a decent era of life, especially when compared to the era that would follow. That was because despite the evil of the Power of Zodo, Taal himself was still partially control over his own being as was himself a good person. Also the magic of the world was still in complete balance. It ended though when the Power of Zodo had finally gained an advantage in controlling its oracle and was attempting to do what the Ascian Emperor had failed to do, cast Ablution and free the Soul of Zodo from Xodod - but was distracted and defeated in the process. Wielding a sacred weapon given by Mogen David, the heroes were able to shatter the Power of Zodo. This shattering though, and the disruption of a nearly complete casting of Ablution, came with a great priceā€¦
The Fifth Era: This is the current era that we are in. Some refer to it as the Era Without Zodo, but that would be false. This is better yet described as the Era of Ablution, as it was the disruption of the nearly completed casting of Ablution and the shattering of the Power of Zodo that caused the Great Magic Apocalypse - Known as the Ablution Event - that brought this era into being. This is a harsh era, perhaps the harshest of any era to have existed, an era where the very forces that keep this world together are thrown into chaos and magic has become unstable. Many argue that this is because the Power of Zodo is scattered, thus the magic of the world no longer has a controlling force. Others say it is because of the infusion of the Power of Zodo's dark and chaotic power that magic is unstable. Whatever the case this is an era of survival.

3. How The Eras End or Change

The event that marks the changing of the eras, with the possible exception of the change from Before the Eras to The First Era, are known as Breakings. Breakings are events of a global nature that are so massive that nothing is the same afterwards.
The First Breaking was at the end of the Great Magic War and the defeat of Xerxes Zodo. It ended the First Era.
The Second Breaking was the defeat of the Ascian Emperor while he was casting Ablution. Many say it was the casting of Ablution that was the true Second Breaking. It ended the Second Era.
The Third Breaking was the ruining of the world during the climatic fight between Taal Zodo and Saint Ardatha, when Taal Zodo became the lord of the land so to speak. It ended the Third Era.
The Fourth Breaking was the shattering of the Power of Zodo and the interrupted casting (it still cast, just not fully) of Ablution. It caused the Ablution event and the ending of the Fourth Era.
