Ithlamar the Redeemer

"The blade that forgives cuts darkness deeper than any sword."

 - Nikolai de'Carte

Ithlamar the Redeemer is perhaps the most difficult of the legendary weapons to understand and to wield. Despite being a sword, it is not a weapon in the common sense as it cannot be used in combat against just any enemy. Instead, it is a weapon meant to cut away possessions of the worst kind - possessions of the demon princes of Xodod and of their master, Zodo.

Origins of Ithlamar

"Lower thy sword, and forgive them for they not understand the wounds they cause nor the evil they do."

 - Kymara the Sol Anon, Gospel of Anartis, Book of Truth

It has been said that Ithlamar the Redeemer was once just an ordinary rapier worn by one of the soldiers in charge of the execution of Kymara. According to scripture, after Kymara gave up her ghost, the soldier was instructed to make certain that she was indeed dead, so the soldier turned to stab the Sol Anon with his rapier, only he could not bring himself to do so. His superior ordered him again, and under threat of death did he comply, only after asking the lifeless body for forgiveness. The blood of the Sol Anon coated the rapier, changing it to the holy sword that it is today.

According to further scriptures in the Book of Truth, the rapier was never again able to harm an innocent man, but the soldier refused to part ways with it. Then one day he came upon someone who was possessed by a demon of Xodod. The other soldiers with him wanted to slay the man right away and brand him a murderer and seducer of demons, but the soldier with the rapier who's name was Cadius, refused to do so.

"And so, with threats of death behind me and threats of damnation before me, I brought out the blood coated rapier and laid its blade upon the possessed man's shoulder. Speaking calmly I smiled at the distressed man, "In the name of the sacred Kymara who I have helped slay, I forgive you in hopes that I too one day might find forgiveness." The sword then reacted in such a way as I've never seen before, glowing a brilliant white, and cut the demon free from the man. The man bore not a scratch but I was left with a reminder of the cost of mercy that day, a scar down my torso that ever shall I cherish."

 - 10:24 Ithlamar, Book of Truth

The sword was further given the name Ithlamar the Redeemer, which is really a repetitious name as Ithlamar is elvish for redeemer. And as you can imagine, it has become regarded as a holy object by the Church of Sol Anon.

No one knows what has happened to the sword since those early days. Many treasure hunters have sought for it over the ages with no luck and the Church of Sol Anon has offered a substantial reward for anyone who finds and surrenders the sword to them.

Ithlamar in Role Play

Ithlamar is a rapier so you might suspect that it would be able to be used like a rapier. Only, it cannot be used like a normal sword. The sword will do no damage against any target. Its sole purpose is to cut away possession.

Legendary Artifact: Ithlamar the Redeemer
Weapon Type: Sword - Rapier
Attack Value: N/A - can't be used as a weapon to attack
Parry Value: 80 physical, 100 magical
Range: 2

Other Information:
  • Free's touched target from any possession and prevents repossession by same spirit
  • Deals wielder 25% Vitality damage when used to free someone
  • Immunity to curses and possessions

If used against a possessed target, the player must declare that his character forgives the target out loud. Obviously the character must truly feel forgiveness, so anything that blocks or nullifies emotion for the character will render Ithlamar useless in attempting to free a possessed target. Once the declaration is made, the wielder would strike the possessed target with Ithlamar. The GM may require a will check here to make certain that the wielder does feel forgiveness, or may simply allow the player to state that he does. Once struck, the possessing spirit will be driven out of the possessed target, freeing the target. Furthermore, that target will not be able to be unwillingly possessed again by the same spirit. As indicated above, the target will bear no wounds from Ithlamar, but the wielder will receive a cut and 25% Vitality damage.

While Ithlamar is meant for certain possessions, Ithlamar in role play can be used to free any target of any possession. The wielder should understand though that every time Ithlamar is used to free a possession, he or she will receive a new scar.

Ithlamar also can be used defensively. It has a Parry of 80 and a Magic Parry of 100. It simply cannot be used with any defensive skill that causes damage to the attacker. Ithlamar also protects the wielder from any form of possession or control.
