This spell is a part of the Lost Memories spell chain and is found in the Lost Memories rune stone.
The praeteriamancer has always known that the past is not silent. It is full of people who knew things; things that have since been forgotten, buried, lost to the particular entropy of time that erases most of what was ever known. Historians piece together fragments. Detectives trace backward from evidence. But the praeteriamancer has a more direct approach. If the past holds the answers, the praeteriamancer will simply go and ask.
When this spell is cast powerful time magic surrounds the caster, drawing a veil around them that blocks all outward vision of what transpires within. To the praeteriamancer comes a figure - not summoned, exactly, but called, a shadow of someone who once lived, their form indistinct and their face unrecognizable, drawn forward from wherever Memory holds them by the particular gravity of the praeteriamancer's need. This person is not a ghost. They are not truly present. They are a shadow shaped by history, influenced by the events and circumstances currently surrounding the praeteriamancer's life and adventures, and they carry within them the knowledge they had in life.
They will answer ten questions. No more and no less. The answers are yes or no only - the shadow is not a conversationalist, cannot elaborate or explain or offer context. It simply knows what it knows and responds accordingly. The GM speaks for the shadow, answering from the perspective of what this particular person from the past would truthfully know. The spell ends when all ten questions have been asked and answered, the shadow dissolving back into wherever Memory keeps such things. The praeteriamancer chooses their questions carefully. Ten is not as many as it sounds when the answers you are seeking are the kind that change everything.
