This spell is a part of the Blotting spell chain and is found in the Blotting rune stone.
There is a fear older than language. Older than civilization. Older than almost anything the conscious mind has learned to name or categorize. It lives in the part of every living thing that remembers a time before explanations - before astronomy, before understanding, before anyone knew why the sun occasionally disappeared in the middle of the day and left the world in cold and sudden darkness. They did not know. And in not knowing, they felt something that no amount of subsequent understanding has ever entirely erased.
Frightful Eclipse reaches through Dread and wakes that fear. Not by creating real darkness - the sun continues, the world continues - but by planting in every enemy on the battlefield the overwhelming and irrational certainty that the light is failing. That something terrible is happening to the sky. That this is an omen and it is aimed at them. Every enemy must make a Hard Mental Balance check as Dread floods them with that ancient wordless terror - failing means they are consumed by Fear and unable to act for 1d3 rounds as the superstitious dread of the eclipse overrides everything else. Those who resist still find their ability to focus compromised, requiring Hard Perceive checks to move, attack, or act as the phantom eclipse pulls their attention skyward. Those already suffering from Nyctophobia find the effect doubled - for them the eclipse is not a fear of an omen. It is the confirmation of everything they were already afraid of.
